Heather Newton, Former Great Smokies Writing Program Student, Wins Thomas Wolfe Literary Award

Heather Newton has won the 2011 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award for her novel Under The Mercy Trees. The Western North Carolina Historical Association and JoAnn L. Edwinn present the award each year in recognition of outstanding literary achievement for works which are by native or resident North Carolinians or which are set in western North Carolina.
Past winners have included Wayne Caldwell, Charles Frazier, Tommy Hays, Ron Rash and Lee Smith.
