Writers at Home Spring Series Concludes with Readings from "The Great Smokies Review"

The Writers at Home spring series concludes with readings by contributors to recent issues of "The Great Smokies Review," the online literary magazine published by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program. This event is free and open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., Asheville.

History, poetry, and children’s literature inspired by the Great Smoky Mountains will be featured in “Books to Take Backpacking,” presented by the Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Historian Margaret Brown, poet Thomas Rain Crowe, and children’s author Ann Clayton will read from their works at 3 p.m.Sunday, April 15, at Malaprop’s Bookstore and Café, 55 Haywood St in downtown Asheville. This “Writers at Home” event will encourage and inspire stewardship of the Great Smoky Mountains, and is free and open to the public.

Dear Friends – Please join us on Friday for a reading and celebration of the collaborative novel “Naked Came the Leaf Peeper.” Should be a lot of fun. Several of the collaborators, including yours truly, are current or past instructors for UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program. 11 of the 12 collaborators will be attending the event. Also Rob Neufeld reviewed “Naked” in this past Sunday’s Asheville Citizen-Times. Please join us for an evening of “Naked” fun.

UNC Asheville Offers GRE Prep Courses Beginning March 19

Registration is now open for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) prep classes offered in March by the Asheville Graduate Center. Classes will meet on the UNC Asheville campus.

UNC Asheville's undergraduate writing scholarship winners will present their works in the next installment of UNC Asheville's Writers at Home series. Authors include Ryan-Ashley Anderson, Lily Latini, Matthew Owens, Mary Ellen Phillips, and Chett Tiller. The reading begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.
UNC Asheville Offers Effective Teacher Training Classes

Effective Teacher Training classes will be offered on four Saturdays beginning March 24, by the Asheville Graduate Center at UNC Asheville. Effective Teacher Training is required substituting in the Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools, and this course also qualifies for three continuing education credits for already certified teachers.

Katherine Soniat of Great Smokies Writing Program Wins Book Award

Katherine Soniat, who teaches in UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program, has won the Poetry Council of North Carolina’s award for best book of 2011. Soniat won the award, the Oscar Arnold Young award, for “The Swing Girl” (2011, LSU Press), her fourth poetry volume.
